Mahale didn’t see her baby for two days after the C-section — when they gave him back, she hugged him so tightly that the caregivers started to cry

Mahale had been in labor all morning when something went wrong. The Sedgwick County Zoo team in Wichita, Kansas, saw that her progress had stalled and that she was becoming more and more exhausted. They decided to intervene: emergency C-section. Kucheza was born — “to play”, in Swahili — on a Tuesday at 12:48 p.m. But the baby had low oxygen levels and was immediately taken to the veterinary hospital. Mahale woke up from surgery without her son.

Two days. That’s how long it was until the reunion. No one could explain to 28-year-old Mahale why she was no longer pregnant and her baby was not with her. When they finally returned Kucheza to her — wrapped in a blanket, still — she entered the enclosure, saw him, and picked him up in one motion. She pressed him against her chest. She did not let go.

The zoo summed it up this way: “She hasn’t let go of him since she took him in her arms yesterday morning”. The video of that moment went viral and reached millions of people. The caregivers were filming through tears.
