Colton Burpo was just 4 years old when a misdiagnosed case of appendicitis nearly cost him his life.

While doctors fought to save him, he says he rose above his own body and saw, from above, his mother praying on the phone in a hallway and his father praying out loud in another room. Then came the inexplicable: he found himself sitting on Jesus’ lap, surrounded by angels singing to calm his fear. He described a man with a brown beard, a radiant smile, and visible wounds on his hands, dressed in white with a purple sash.

The most endearing part was not the vision, but the domestic detail that made it believable to so many people: in heaven, Colton ate pizza and macaroni and cheese, and even stroked a horse with a rainbow-colored mane. Today, at 27 and working as a worship pastor, he says he is no longer afraid of death. In the meantime, he simply hopes to live a life worth telling again on the other side.
