A pile of dry branches shouldn’t move. But this one did.
Celestarius Monsour, a Florida resident, was at his front door when he saw that little log cabin moving across the ground. Inside lived a moth caterpillar known as a bagworm, an insect that from birth makes its own silk and uses it as cement to bind twigs and leaves together. With it, it builds a shelter it carries everywhere, camouflage and armor all in one.
Monsour had seen those empty cases before, but never their inhabitant in motion. And there is one fact that makes it even more astonishing: when males mature, they turn into moths and fly away. Females, on the other hand, never develop wings. They remain forever inside the shelter they built themselves.
