In September 2015, Maria Nemeth was 31 years old and had spent the night drinking tequila with her boyfriend at her apartment in Sunrise, Florida. At some point, while they were having sex inside the closet, she said the name of her ex-husband. Not once, but several times.
Fidel Lopez, 24, said nothing at first, but stormed off in a rage to destroy things throughout the house. During that time, due to her heavy alcohol consumption, Maria passed out and lay unconscious on the closet floor. It was then that he returned, found her unconscious and attacked her with his bare hands, causing devastating internal injuries that led to her death.
When the paramedics arrived, Lopez claimed that she had vomited and collapsed on her own. The police did not believe his version and, during questioning, he eventually confessed what really happened in the early hours of that morning. In 2017, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and sexual assault to avoid the death penalty, and he is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
