Man planted thousands of flowers over two years so his blind wife would want to leave the house again

Yasuko Kuroki lost her sight due to complications from diabetes and, with it, also lost the desire to go out. Little by little, she shut herself away in her home in Japan, distancing herself from a world she could no longer see.

Her husband, Toshiyuki, didn’t know how to bring her back. He couldn’t give her images or colors. But he could give her something that didn’t need eyes: scent. So for two years he planted thousands of flowers in the field surrounding their house — not really knowing whether it would work, with no guarantees, only the hope that the fragrance would encourage her to step outside.

It worked. And over the years, that garden grew in both fame and beauty, and began receiving visitors from all over the world. What began as an intimate gesture from a man to his wife became, without meaning to, a place where others also go looking for something.
