James was just walking along his street in Portsmouth, England, when something motionless among a black bag caught his attention.
He thought it was an old garden ornament, the kind of thing people throw away without thinking twice. But that face blinked. It moved. And that was when he realized he was looking at a live turtle, trapped, which had managed to make a hole in the plastic with its own legs to breathe. The garbage truck would be there in less than an hour.

With his mother’s help, he got a box and put the turtle somewhere safe before knocking on the house’s door. He feared the worst: that someone had abandoned it on purpose. The truth was different. Its owner had simply left the bag open for a few minutes while cleaning the habitat in the garden, and the little turtle, curious as ever, had slipped inside without anyone noticing.
When the woman held the turtle in her hands again, after years together, she couldn’t hold back her tears. A lapse of just seconds nearly cost that turtle the rest of its life.
