Joshua Dixon is 26 years old and grew up sleeping alongside his dogs in Chicago.

Shoop and Bam Bam were not just any pets: they were part of the family, the guardians of the house, the animals he had shared a bed with since childhood. His father trusted them like any relative. Bam Bam, however, had been showing aggressive behavior since arriving at the home months earlier. No one took it as enough of a warning.

Everything changed the day Joshua slipped on black ice. The fright triggered something in one of the dogs, and what followed was an attack that tore off his nose and ears. He survived thanks to a 26-hour surgery. Shoop and Bam Bam were euthanized after the incident, but Joshua’s face had already changed forever.
