Kadir Markus was 47 years old and that afternoon, he only wanted to have a few drinks.
It was July 24, 2024, in Muna Regency, in southeastern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Markus was drinking with a 30-year-old acquaintance identified as D.R. when, amid laughter and alcohol, someone posed the oldest riddle in the world: Which came first, the egg or the chicken? What was supposed to be a party anecdote turned into an increasingly tense argument. Tired of the subject, Markus tried to get up from the table.
D.R. did not let him go so easily. According to police, he went to his house, took a badik—a traditional dagger—and came back looking for him. He chased him and attacked him without giving him a chance to defend himself. Markus died from his injuries. D.R. turned himself in at the Tongkuno police station, dagger in hand, facing up to 18 years in prison over a simple question.
