Sunrise Highway forgives no one. Cars travel at more than 100 km/h along that Long Island highway, and amid the roar of engines, someone spotted something that shouldn’t have been there: a ball of black fur, motionless, asleep on the concrete median.
Drivers called for help, and half an hour later John DeBacker, a volunteer rescuer from the area, arrived. What he found left him frozen: a kitten barely eight weeks old, just inches from the wheels roaring past. To approach without the kitten jumping into the lanes, he needed the traffic to stop.
That’s when Suffolk County police stepped in. The officers stopped traffic for just long enough for John to move forward slowly, step by step, and take her in his hands before she fully woke up. She hissed, scratched, and tried to escape in fright—but she was safe. Today, her name is Sunrise, and she is waiting for a family at Last Hope Animal Rescue.
