Michael Nayler was 45 when cancer took everything from him, including Minnie.
In May 2021, in Fort Erie, Ontario, he was diagnosed with a rare intestinal tumor. At first, they told him it was pancreatic cancer, the worst possible news. His body deteriorated, the treatments wore him down, and in October 2022 he made the most painful decision of his life: surrendering Minnie, his English mastiff mix, to the Greater Niagara Humane Society. He couldn’t even take care of himself.
Minnie had a foster home in 2023 that didn’t work out, and she returned to the shelter. Michael fell into depression, convinced that he had lost her forever. But in June 2024, he found her photo on the shelter’s page, still waiting. That pushed him to keep fighting. In October, he went into remission and rushed to get her. The reserved and calm dog the shelter staff knew transformed when she saw him: she jumped all over him while both of them, according to the staff, cried as they embraced. Summer, his wife, says Minnie was never a pet. She’s family.
