Russell Mumper, vice president for research at Indiana University, set out in 2012 to do something that sounded almost impossible: walk the equivalent of the Earth’s full circumference. 24.901 miles. No sponsorships, no cameras, no reason other than a genuine love of walking.

Fourteen years later, on June 25, he crossed his own finish line at the entrance to his home, alongside his two dogs, while his wife raised a checkered flag. No parties or headlines. Just his family and the weight of thousands of accumulated days.

Along the way, he logged 5.900 walks, took some 55 million steps, and wore out 49 pairs of sneakers, all while working full time and as his family moved three times between different states. “My father is the hardest-working man I know”, said his daughter Shannon. How much time would you devote to something when you do not even know when you will finish?
