Hasim Lumbessy, 35, had spent the night drinking at a rural bar in northern Maluku, Indonesia. At 3 a.m. on Monday, July 27, he was walking alone along a wooded path back home. He never arrived.
His relatives began searching for him that same afternoon. Halfway along the route, they found blood on the ground. Farther on, a backpack, a shoulder bag, and sandals, according to police chief Handres. A trail of flattened grass led them into the forest near the Fatliwangka road, where a snake with a visibly distorted and swollen body appeared.
Villagers opened the belly of the 7-meter animal, and Hasim was inside. The community returned the body to the family for religious rites, and police issued a warning: those working in orchards or walking through the forest should always be accompanied. The area, Handres said, remains wildlife habitat.
