In the early 90s, Michael Corke worked as a music teacher and was preparing for his wedding. However, everything changed when he began to suffer from a strange disorder that prevented him from sleeping at all.

At first, doctors thought it was stress or depression, but as the months passed his condition worsened rapidly. Michael lost his balance and began to suffer from hallucinations, memory problems, and signs of dementia.

He was admitted to the University of Chicago Hospital, where specialists discovered that he had fatal familial insomnia, an extremely rare prion disease that destroys the part of the brain responsible for regulating sleep. Not even induced coma managed to make his brain rest.

With the inability to sleep, his physical and mental health deteriorated rapidly. Michael Corke died in 1993, without having been able to recover or celebrate his wedding.
