Lauren Heike was 29 years old and went out for a run on the Reach 11 trail north of Phoenix on April 28, 2023. She never came back.
Her body was found the next day in a desert area behind a home. The medical examiner counted 15 stab wounds, as well as defensive wounds on her hands and forearms: Lauren fought for her life. Police believe she may have been chased over a barbed-wire fence.

The man behind the attack was Zion Teasley, who lived near the trail and didn’t know her. He was identified by his DNA on the victim’s shoe and location data from his cellphone. He was arrested on May 4, 2023, at 22 years old, with a criminal record.
Now 25, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. According to a 300-page police report cited by media outlets, Teasley was struggling with his gender identity. During the investigation, he allegedly said he felt depressed when he saw “beautiful” women because he felt trapped being “a man”. Investigators suggested that this conflict may have been connected to the attack on Lauren, whom he didn’t know.
Teasley will probably avoid the death penalty under the agreement. His sentence will be announced on December 4, and he could receive life in prison. Lauren’s mother remembered her this way: “She had such a kind heart”.
