The most shocking thing is that, when she was born, doctors didn’t even know how to explain what they were seeing.

Mandy Sellars was born in the United Kingdom with legs much larger than the rest of her body. The growth began in her first days of life, and for years specialists tried to understand what was causing it.

Over time, her legs continued to grow disproportionately. One of them came to weigh 108 kilograms, while the other had to be amputated after Mandy developed sepsis and her life was in danger.

But even after the amputation, the growth did not stop completely. The stump grew larger again, eventually measuring nearly a meter in circumference and weighing about 19 kilograms.

For a long time, her case was so unusual that doctors had neither a clear diagnosis nor an established treatment. Finally, researchers analyzed her DNA and developed an experimental therapy to try to slow the growth. Mandy said that after she began the treatment, her legs even started to shrink a little.

After spending much of her life not knowing exactly what was happening to her body, Mandy eventually became one of those cases that compel medicine to seek new answers.
