Liam and Noel Gallagher thought they were only going upstairs to take a photograph with Diego Maradona. They had no idea what awaited them…
Oasis was touring Argentina in 1997. After one of their concerts in Buenos Aires, the brothers were quietly drinking at the hotel bar when around 30 people came rushing in. In the middle of the group, they recognized Maradona, accompanied by bodyguards, friends, and several women.
Liam and Noel did not want to miss the opportunity to meet him. They asked an interpreter to speak to the soccer player and, minutes later, received the response: Maradona agreed to see them, but only the two brothers could come upstairs. The rest of Oasis had to stay downstairs.
“Maradona was in the middle of the room doing soccer tricks with a bottle cap and had his eyes this wide… although ours weren’t far behind”. Liam commented years later.
According to the Gallaghers, after taking a photograph with their idol and leaving, the interpreter conveyed one final warning from Maradona:
“He says that if they take any of these women with them, he’ll have them killed”.
Liam and Noel left with the death threat echoing in their heads. For years, that was the known version of one of the strangest nights Oasis had ever experienced, until in 2023 the Mexican singer Cristian Castro revealed a juicy detail.
During the program Paren la Mano, the singer confessed that he had also taken part in that hotel party with Maradona and the Gallagher brothers. According to his account, several women arrived at the suite, things began to get heated, and clothes ended up becoming unnecessary.
“Everyone ended up completely naked, there, showing off their ball control”, he revealed with a laugh.
Cristian even claimed that the scandal led to them being kicked out of the hotel and that he was still banned from the place. If his version is correct, Liam and Noel would have omitted for years the most out-of-control detail of that night: that they ended up naked and playing with a ball in front of Maradona.
Although neither of the Gallagher brothers has publicly confirmed that they got naked or played soccer inside the room.
The photograph proves that Liam and Noel were partying with Maradona. They remembered the women, the bulging eyes, and the death threat. Perhaps the full truth remained locked forever in that hotel room. Or perhaps none of those who left it were in any condition to remember it.
