Marta Bustos Góngora was 24 years old.

It was June 11, 2020, and she was in the United States, far from Terrassa, her hometown, doing something as simple as making artisanal soap at home. A chemical reacted badly, something broke in her eyes, and within seconds the world turned black. There was no warning or time to react: from an everyday movement to total darkness.

For more than a year she lived without seeing anything. The doctors tried, waited, and tried again, until an operation managed to restore the vision in her right eye. Her left eye remained in darkness forever. Marta wrote it all down in her book ‘When I Lost My Brown Eyes’, where she details every stage of that process with an honesty that is unsettling and moving at the same time.

Today she gives talks about what she experienced. She says she learned to judge less, because you never know what accident changed the life of the person in front of you.
