Martin Davis ate bacon for breakfast, drank cappuccino with four sugars, and by mid-morning he was already on his second sandwich of the day. Then came the five chocolate cookies. And always, without fail, an entire bottle of vodka.

That went on for years, until the scales showed 27 and a half stone —around 175 kilos— and doctors gave him news that changed everything: if he carried on like that, he had months to live. Nine serious diagnoses confirmed it, including liver damage, sleep apnea and kidney dysfunction.

Martin quit alcohol and carbohydrates from one day to the next. He swapped the cookies for nuts, the vodka for mussels and prawns, and put together a meal routine that would last him the week. The result: 15 stone less, almost 95 kilos he no longer carries. His body is still undergoing treatment, but he is still standing — something his doctors had not been sure of.
