When they entered Mary Reeser’s apartment, they found a scene that to this day continues to bewilder the world. 😰

The 67-year-old woman had been reduced almost completely to ashes inside her home in Florida. Only a leg and her skull remained next to the armchair where she had been sitting, but the strangest thing was that much of the room was still intact.

The case occurred in 1951 and led the FBI and several experts to try to discover how a body could burn that way without causing a larger fire.

“I consider it the most incredible thing I have ever seen. As I examine it, the short hairs on my neck stand up with vague fear. If I lived in the Middle Ages, I would mutter something about black magic”, said physical anthropologist Wilton M. Krogman, who investigated the case.

Although authorities believe it all began when Mary fell asleep with a lit cigarette after taking sleeping pills, many people still consider her death one of the most shocking cases of spontaneous human combustion. 😱🔥
