The mayor of Surco, Carlos Bruce, found himself at the center of controversy after a video went viral showing him using a taser gun on one of his advisers. In the footage, the official falls to the ground after receiving the electric shock, in the middle of an activity linked to new security devices for the local police.

Bruce pushed back against the criticism and said the video is “an edited excerpt taken out of context” from an activity carried out “in a private and trusting environment”. He also maintained that the adviser’s participation was “completely voluntary” and that “at no point was there a situation of real risk or major consequences”.

Despite his statements, the images sparked strong controversy on social media, where many users questioned whether the mayor was fit to use this type of device on a person, even if it was in a demonstration context. The case remains a topic of debate in Peru.
