Fayza Lamari did not play a single match, but she experienced everything as if she were on the field. Before becoming known as Kylian Mbappé’s mother, she was a handball player in Bondy, near Paris.
She then became his agent, his adviser and, according to her own account, the person who absorbed the most pressure from watching him grow under the spotlight.
She sums it up with a number that says more than any speech: she gained 22 kilos. It was during the period between a decisive match against Manchester City and her son’s transfer to PSG, when the name Mbappé began to be repeated in every corner of world football. The stress, she says, settled into her body before she could process it in her mind.
Today she runs several of the companies behind Kylian’s image and says she learned to manage this life she never entirely asked for. Behind every goal her son scored, there was a mother carrying a weight no one saw.
