“Men don’t approach me; they see me as unattainable”: Athenea del Castillo’s confession, World Cup champion with Spain

She is a world champion and a starter at Real Madrid, but in love, she says, something doesn’t add up.

Athenea del Castillo, a forward for Real Madrid’s women’s team and the Spanish national team, confessed that men don’t approach her: “They don’t make a move on me; they see me as unattainable”. And she said it with a clarification that carries more weight than the complaint: “no one is unattainable”.

For the footballer, fame doesn’t put her above anyone. “We’re all equal, each of us has our own worth, and we all deserve equal respect”, she said. “I’ve never thought I was better than anyone because I’m well-known”.

The paradox is striking: a player who lifted the World Cup in 2023 and fills stadiums says her biggest obstacle isn’t on the pitch, but the distance others imagine between her and everyone else.
