Meryl Streep is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses and has publicly defended women’s rights. However, a statement she made in 2015 surprised even those who admired her commitment to equality.

While promoting Suffragette, a film about the fight for women’s right to vote in which she played activist Emmeline Pankhurst, she was asked directly whether she considered herself a feminist.

“I’m a humanist. I’m in favor of a harmonious balance”, she replied.

Her words drew criticism, especially because the actress had launched initiatives to support screenwriters over 40 and advocated for greater female representation in Hollywood’s positions of power.

The controversy also contrasted with an earlier statement, in which Streep had described herself as a feminist during a tribute to Emma Thompson.

Days later, the actress addressed the issue again and explained that she preferred to let her actions speak for her.

“Actions, not words”, she said, quoting a line from the film.

Her response sparked a debate about labels and equality: while some questioned her avoidance of the word feminist, others defended her right to identify however she wished.
