Haaland had also had his night: a brace, Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq, and millions of eyes on him. But as soon as Argentina vs. Algeria ended, he opened Snapchat and wrote just four words: “Messi is a madman” 👑 — accompanied by a crown emoji. The phrase became a global trend within minutes. 🌍

And the reason was obvious. At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Messi — at 38 years old — scored his first hat-trick in a World Cup and led Argentina to a 3-0 victory in their Group J debut. With those three goals, La Pulga drew level with Miroslav Klose as the all-time top scorer in World Cups with 16 goals. 🐐 Thomas Müller also bowed down on social media. And Scaloni, with no filter: “He will be the best in history forever”.

Messi cried after his first goal, although he clarified that it was for personal reasons unrelated to football. The guy many doubted would arrive at the World Cup in shape responded in the only way he knows how: with a masterpiece. ⚽🔥
