More than a decade after becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the adult content industry, Mia Khalifa spoke again about the moment that completely changed her life.
In 2014, when she was just 21 years old, Khalifa recorded a video that ended up becoming a worldwide phenomenon. In the scene, she appeared wearing a hijab, a religious garment that sparked enormous controversy and led to her receiving criticism and threats from different parts of the world.
However, according to her, at the time she never imagined the magnitude it would reach.
“At that time, I still thought no one was going to find out about this”, she recalled.
What seemed like a short-term decision ended up becoming a label that would follow her for years. Although her time in the adult industry was brief, the impact of that video continued to surface in her daily life.
Khalifa explained that the fame came to feel like a burden. Even when she tried to work in other fields, such as at a construction company, she felt that image from the past was still following her.
The situation also affected her personal relationships. The creator said that for years she had difficulty trusting other people’s intentions, especially those of potential partners.
“I can’t mentally get over someone wanting to be with me because of the novelty or for that reason. I would rather be alone”, she explained.
According to her account, over the last 10 years she has only had two long-term romantic relationships, due to the distrust she developed after the worldwide exposure she received.
“There were many situations in which I interacted with people and realized: my life is no longer the same”, she noted.
Over time, Mia Khalifa managed to reinvent herself as a content creator, entrepreneur, and influencer, seeking to regain control over her own image. But her story became an example of the reach the internet can have: a moment recorded in just a few minutes can stay with a person for years.
