Michelle Obama said in 2016 that truly strong men “don’t need to put women down to feel powerful” and nearly a decade later, her words still ring true

On October 13, 2016, Michelle Obama set aside her usual campaign speech.

She was in Manchester, New Hampshire, at a rally for Hillary Clinton, and a few days earlier, a 2005 recording from Access Hollywood had been made public, featuring Donald Trump’s comments about women. She said those words had shaken her to her core. Without naming anyone, she said this wasn’t politics as usual, but a matter of basic human decency.

And then she delivered the line that went around the world: “Let’s be very clear: strong men, the ones who are truly role models, don’t need to put women down to feel powerful”.

She rejected the excuse of “locker room talk” and reminded everyone that boys and young men look to adults for an idea of what it means to be a man. Years later, she revealed that she wrote the outline for that speech in a waiting room while her mother was undergoing surgery.

Nearly ten years have passed, and the line still holds true: the strength that truly matters is the kind that lifts others up.
