Mickey Rourke was one of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs during the 1980s, but behind his fame and strong-man image lay a childhood marked by violence and fear.

The star of Nine 1/2 Weeks revealed that his stepfather constantly beat him and also abused his mother, experiences that left deep emotional scars.

“My stepfather hit me on the head simply because he wanted to”, the actor recalled as he spoke about those years.

Rourke admitted that the fear never completely went away. Even after becoming a movie star, he continued to face the psychological consequences of the abuse he suffered as a child.

“Fear keeps me from sleeping”, he said, describing how those memories continued to affect him.

During his youth, he found refuge in boxing, a discipline that allowed him to channel some of his pain, but years later also caused him serious physical injuries.

The beatings, reconstructive surgeries, and personal struggles ended up shaping his adult life.

Behind the actor who conquered Hollywood was a boy who grew up feeling afraid and who, decades later, was still trying to overcome the wounds of his past.
