At a ranch in Tamaulipas, marines, the FGR and the SSPC searched five properties linked to an alleged drug lord and there, among makeshift cages, they found a liger: a giant hybrid of a lion and a tigress that does not exist in the wild and is only born in captivity. Living alongside it were Bengal tigers, jaguars, African lions, hyenas, 21 spider monkeys, bison, buffalo and even a camel—135 animals in total.
Profepa confirmed that at least 90 specimens are protected or endangered species, and that many, like the liger itself, suffer from health problems due to the gigantism caused by their genetic crossbreeding. The operation ended with 68 thousand liters of diesel seized, weapons confiscated and one person arrested. 😳
