A robbery ended in a death and a conviction that has divided opinion in Italy. Cinzia Dal Pino, a businesswoman from Viareggio, was robbed in September 2024 as she was heading to her car after dinner.
The perpetrator fled with her purse, but the woman decided to chase him in her Mercedes.

Security cameras recorded her catching up with the man, identified as Noureddine Mezgui, and running him over four times. She then got out of the vehicle, retrieved her belongings, and left without calling emergency services.
Mezgui, 52, died from the severe injuries he sustained.

Dal Pino claimed that the man had threatened her with a knife and that she had only intended to stop him. However, the weapon was never found.
In June 2026, a court sentenced her to 18 years in prison for intentional homicide, although it ordered that she remain under house arrest. Her defense announced that it would appeal.

The case reignited a debate about the limits of self-defense: while some believe she was reacting to a crime, others point out that she chased and killed a man who was already fleeing.
