Ian Steger had been snowboarding at Mount Baker, Washington, for 31 years. He knew that mountain by heart. But on March 3, 2023, he fell into a tree well and was buried under nearly two meters of snow (6 feet), unable to see or hear absolutely anything.
He thought that was where it all ended. Months earlier, he had lost a close friend in exactly the same way.
Then Francis Zuber appeared, a skier who was alone in that remote area and nearly skied over the snowboard sticking out of the snow. Using his avalanche rescue training, he dug straight toward Steger’s head and cleared his airways just in time. Everything was recorded on his GoPro. Today, the two still ski together as friends 🎥❄️
