Capitán was a stray dog, a mixed breed with some German Shepherd, when Miguel Guzmán decided to give him a home in Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba. No one imagined that gesture would become one of Argentina’s most remembered stories of loyalty.
When Guzmán died in March 2006, Capitán disappeared. His family searched for him unsuccessfully for months, until they found him lying on his owner’s grave in the municipal cemetery. No one had taken him there. No one had shown him the way. And yet, from that day on, he stayed to live among the graves.
Every afternoon, punctual at six o’clock, Capitán would lie down beside Miguel’s headstone. He did so for almost 11 years, even when his eyesight and strength began to fail him. His story reached France, Latin America, and every corner where someone needed to believe that a dog’s love has no expiration date. The city’s Animal Protection Foundation took care of him in his final years, while he continued to keep his daily appointment.
In February 2018, Capitán died at the age of 16. He passed away after waiting for his owner for almost 11 years, never failing to return to that grave he had made his home. 😭❤️🩹
