Kaylub Giamanco was returning from lunch when he heard gunshots near Silver Rail School in Bend, Oregon.
According to his mother, Kenda Freeman, the 36-year-old parked on the lawn, took the .40-caliber pistol he legally carried, and followed the shooter inside the school. His two daughters attend school there. Police say they found a teacher wrestling with the attacker, a 16-year-old, and that Giamanco fired several times, killing him. The shooter still had 44 unused rounds. Before Giamanco arrived, three children and a 25-year-old teacher had already died. His daughters were unharmed.

Minutes later, he called his mother. “Mom, I just shot and killed someone”, he told her, according to what she told CBS News Sacramento. Freeman replied that he was a hero and had saved many lives. He answered: “Mom, I couldn’t save them all”. His mother says he is traumatized. “My heart goes out to those families; they couldn’t take their children home”, she said.
