“Mom, you’re a man”: the moving conversation between a mother and her adopted son when the little boy asked her about her gender identity

They were cooking, all together, when the youngest blurted out the words without warning: “mom, you’re a man”.

No one laughed at first. The mother looked at him, put down what she was holding, and took him to the couch to talk seriously, without rushing. She explained that he wasn’t entirely wrong: that when she was born, she had also been a little boy, that over time things began changing inside, that she felt that little boy was not who she wanted to be. She told him like someone telling a story that turns out to be real.

The same woman who weeks earlier had corrected a fan at a restaurant —”I’m a mom”, she told them, not by her name as a host but by the title that matters most to her— ended up confessing something you wouldn’t expect from a conversation that began among pots and laughter: that son, without knowing it, saved her at the most difficult moment of her life.
