Yuliana Guadalupe Vega Hernández traveled from Culiacán to Guadalajara while still pregnant so her baby could be treated for a neurological condition at an IMSS highly specialized hospital.

Her daughter Dayana was wanted, planned, and loved. At seven days old, she contracted an aggressive infection caused by fungi and bacteria that doctors were never able to eradicate, and died after suffering two cardiac arrests on July 4. Yuliana returned home without her, with physical aftereffects that prevent her from becoming a mother again and about 3.000 dollars spent on travel and funerals.

A few days later, she learned that the newborn children of other mothers she had met during those 34 days had also died. Today, 11 families—though they estimate there are at least 18—are accusing the same unit over the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae and Candida albican. They allege that the nurses did not wear face masks and that the head of the unit admitted that the staff knew about the germs. The IMSS promised an independent audit.
