A kitten cried for help to climb a huge wall, but its mother didn’t come down to rescue it. On the contrary, she stayed up there, staring intently, while her kitten tried again and again to climb the wall without succeeding. Anyone would think: how is that possible? A mother should rush to help it, but she waited, and she must have had a very wise reason for doing so.

Experts in feline behavior explain that mother cats are among the most devoted mothers in the animal kingdom: during the first 8 weeks, they teach their kittens to hunt, climb, defend themselves, and move at heights with almost surgical precision. But that devotion doesn’t mean overprotection. On the contrary: mother cats know that their kittens’ instincts are built by failing, falling, and trying again. That’s why they allow calculated risks without intervening too much.
