Dorisha Rodriguez, from West Seneca, New York, was expecting a delivery like any other. What no one anticipated was the size of her daughter.
Yemayá India Soto was born on June 9 at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester weighing 14 pounds and one ounce, around 6.4 kilos: twice the average established by the WHO for a newborn. During labor, while Dorisha was 5 centimeters dilated, the baby managed to grab one of the doctors’ fingers, a gesture that sped up the decision to perform a C-section.
Doctors later explained to the family that Yemaya had fetal macrosomia, what is known as “big baby syndrome”. After a brief stay in the NICU to monitor her breathing, she was completely healthy. For the hospital staff, she was one of the largest babies they had received in their careers.
