Marieke Voorslujis, from Amsterdam, noticed something that hurt her silently: her son no longer hugged her like before. He preferred going out with friends, looking at his phone, listening to music on his iPod. Nothing wrong, just puberty. But she missed those arms around her.

So she did what she knows best: knit. With her mother’s help, she spent almost two months putting together a life-size replica of her son, thread by thread. A head with a visor, hands with nails, black jeans, sneakers, even a miniature knitted iPod.

“I’m a good mother, so I accept it”, she told BuzzFeed. It wasn’t a strange whim: it was her way of holding on, even if only in wool, to something that time is slowly taking away from her.
