In 2018, what began as a simple storm ended up leaving shocking images.

Fiona Simpson, a 23-year-old Australian mother, was traveling with her barely four-month-old baby and her grandmother when they became trapped in the middle of a brutal hailstorm in Queensland, Australia. The ice stones were so large and forceful that they shattered the car windows.

At that moment, Fiona threw herself over her daughter to cover her with her own body and keep the hail from hitting her. While protecting the baby, she took dozens of blows to her back, arms, and head, ending up completely covered in bruises and injuries.

The images of what her body looked like quickly went around the world. Despite how extreme the situation was, the baby came out virtually unharmed thanks to her mother’s reaction.

“A car can be replaced… my daughter cannot”, she said after the storm.
