Estefanía Echeverría sang beneath the rubble. In Cali, she protected her daughter during the earthquake on August 10, which destroyed their home and took her mother and grandmother from her.
She found a hollow space among the rubble and held her daughter’s hand. Rescuers found them after hearing the girl cry: the girl was pulled out after seven hours, and Estefanía after eight. A metal rod pierced one of her lungs; she arrived at Fundación Valle de Lili with only a 5 % chance of surviving, and doctors had to amputate her legs.
Today, she dreams of watching her daughter grow up. In Cali, Colombian president Abelardo de la Espriella gave her the key to a furnished apartment: a new beginning for the two of them, after singing together to survive.
