A mother in Brazil has just been acquitted after taking her partner’s life. She discovered him trying to abuse her underage daughter. Erica Pereira arrived at her home in Minas Gerais after receiving alarming messages. Upon entering, she heard the little girl’s screams and saw the worst scene imaginable.
The prosecution argued cruelty because the woman drugged the man with clonazepam, beat him and, once he was already dead, amputated his genitals and burned the body.
However, the reality is that the jury understood the pain and absolute desperation of a mother protecting her own blood. After a year in pretrial detention, Erica was declared innocent of aggravated homicide. The court ruled that defending a child is not a crime, it is a basic survival instinct.
