On the José Ramón de la Morena Foundation’s podcast, the 19-year-old Barcelona forward became emotional as he recalled his grandmother’s story. He said she was the first in his family to arrive in Spain, travelling completely alone from Morocco in search of a better future.
“She sneaked onto the bus, stopped in Algeciras, stopped in Granada and managed to get to Mataró”, Lamine recalled. Once settled, Fátima worked morning, afternoon and night so that she could later bring over her son Mounir, the footballer’s father, as well as her daughter.
Today, Fátima still lives in Rocafonda, the same humble neighbourhood where that story began, although she now lives in a house her own grandson bought for her. For Lamine, his grandmother’s greatest legacy was never money, but the example of sacrifice, perseverance and the lesson that one must never give up. That bus journey, which seemed like just another one, ended up being the first step in a story that years later would take his family all the way to a World Cup final.
