Lourdes “Lola” León grew up under the gaze of one of the most famous women in the world.
From a young age, she wanted to build a life for herself away from that shadow. She paid for her own college and apartment, and in 2021 she said it bluntly: “My mother is a control freak and has controlled me my whole life”. Madonna and she had arguments, distance, and the need for each of them to find her place. But behind the clashes, admiration was never lacking.
That’s why the next step came as a surprise. Lourdes was the one who approached her mother and proposed that they write a song together, as a way to “heal their relationship”. That’s how “The Test” was born, included on the album Confessions II. The lyrics speak about what went unsaid for years: love, tension, the pressure of being Madonna’s daughter, and Lourdes’s desire to follow her own path.
“There are many things that go unsaid between a mother and daughter”, Lourdes explained. This time, they didn’t work it out by talking, but in the way they know best: creating together.
