Chris Tucker didn’t expect his fortune to become a family matter.
When he was paid 20 million dollars for Rush Hour 2, at the height of his Hollywood career, several of his relatives did something he never imagined: they quit their jobs. They were convinced that Chris’s money now belonged to them too, and they celebrated by shouting that the entire family had become rich.
Tucker was quick to clear up the misunderstanding. With the humor that characterizes him, he later explained in one of his stand-up specials how he dampened their enthusiasm with a phrase that became famous: he was the only rich person there, and they had better go look for work again before ending up with nothing. Amid the audience’s laughter, the anecdote ended up revealing something more serious: fame brings money, but also other people’s expectations that you have to know how to stop in time.
