What came next was worse for Julian Nagelsmann’s image. In the interview with Lili Engels, a ZDF journalist, the coach responded curtly when asked about his future: he said he is available to continue until Euro 2028, if the Federation decides so. The tone was enough for journalist Daniel Gerhardt to describe him as somewhere between brusque and arrogant.
He was not the only one to question him. Per Mertesacker criticized the team’s performance, and coach Fritzy Kromp described his answers as extremely touchy. Only Joshua Kimmich, the captain, came out to back him and share the responsibility among the players. Meanwhile, Jürgen Klopp’s name is already beginning to be mentioned as a replacement.
