Nala, the little dog who failed as a sheepdog because the sheep think she’s one of them

Nala is four years old, has a cloud-white coat, and had a mission she never managed to accomplish.

Jamie Beau Brewer took her in as a puppy in Broadway, Worcestershire, hoping she would help him herd the family farm’s 200 sheep. The Tibetan Terrier learned the commands, the barks, and the energy the job requires. But one detail worked against her: her fluffy coat and little black nose make her look far too much like the animals she was supposed to herd.

Whenever she tried to gather them, the sheep didn’t take her seriously. Some even played with her, as if she were just another companion. And Nala, with her sweet nature, easily gave in, and the flock got its way. Sometimes she managed to lead them to the gate, but she never finished the job.

Jamie tells it with humor: “She’s a failed working dog… now she spends most of her time at home, in someone’s lap”. Today Nala still accompanies him on the farm, more as a cheerful companion than a worker, and at home she’s everyone’s favorite.

Nala wasn’t a good sheepdog, but she found a place where she’s loved just as she is.
