Nazar is 12 and has spent the past three years battling leukemia and severe pneumonia.

A heart transplant was his only way out. It came thanks to a 10-year-old girl who died in a traffic accident in Ukraine. Her parents, at the worst moment of their lives, agreed to donate her organs.

Months later, the family traveled to Saint Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv. It took them a long time to decide to call and ask about Nazar: they knew his condition was serious. They wanted to hug him and, above all, hear their daughter’s heartbeat again. The mother leaned close to his chest and heard it beating.

Today, Nazar is recovering quickly. And there’s one detail that changes everything: he and the girl both loved singing and building things with blocks.

There are hearts that stop beating for one mother and continue beating in another life.
