Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert had just gotten married.

They were traveling from Markopoulo to the island of Sifnos, in Greece, when something went wrong aboard the helicopter carrying them. Local residents said they heard a strange noise, like that of a military aircraft, seconds before the aircraft began spinning out of control in the air. Security cameras captured everything: the helicopter losing altitude erratically until it crashed near a helipad on the night of Monday, August 17.

The accident also claimed the life of Greek pilot Giorgos Raikos, 55, a father of three. A local official described what rescuers found as a shapeless mass engulfed in flames. Cromie worked at Blackstone and Ebert at Bain & Company; both companies issued statements of mourning. Now, Greece is investigating what went wrong in the air that night.
