Ng Ka-sing, 29, has an explanation for what he did to Yip Tsz-ching, his 30-year-old partner: he claims he beat her for hours to help her lose weight, keeping her awake at night. That is what his defense told Hong Kong’s High Court. The prosecution, by contrast, presented the court with a very different reality, documented with forensic precision.

According to the prosecution, Ng beat Yip intermittently with a metal rod from 10 at night on April 27, 2022 until 5:30 in the morning. At 5 in the morning, she told him she was in unbearable pain and feared she would not survive. At 7:21 am she fell into a coma. The autopsy determined that she died of asphyxiation following head trauma, and that chemical burns — caused by a drain cleaner — covered 55% of her body. Her head was found wrapped in layers of plastic wrap and adhesive tape. Her body, tied to an overturned chair inside a quilt, was discovered by joggers at dawn on April 29: one leg was sticking out of the bundle that Ng was dragging on a wheeled platform along Tin Ha Road. Witnesses stated that the man showed no panic or distress whatsoever.

The defense offered to plead guilty to manslaughter. The prosecution rejected the deal and decided to go to trial for murder. Ng Ka-sing also faces a charge of preventing the lawful burial of a corpse. The proceedings continue.
