Franyel was 35 years old and had been in a relationship for just three months with the man who ended up stabbing her to death.
It was on Sunday, August 9, in Marbella. She was Venezuelan, she was a trans woman, and she had spent years waiting for Spain to finally recognize her for what she was: a woman. The 2023 Trans Law allowed it in theory, but the procedure for foreigners was not activated until July of this year, and Franyel ran out of time.
That is why, when she was killed, the High Court of Justice of Andalusia decided that the case would not be investigated by a gender violence court, but by a general investigating court. The police recorded it as domestic violence. The 58-year-old man, her partner, is in prison without bail. Mar Cambrollé, president of the Trans Association of Andalusia, put it bluntly: she was murdered as a woman, and the State that denied her the paperwork now also denies her justice.
