Kaya came into the world with a congenital facial anomaly that left her with a squashed, somewhat grumpy expression, the kind that can be a little scary at first glance. In July 2021, a stranger found her on the street, dehydrated, malnourished, and covered in fleas, at just 4 weeks old. Odelkis Barrera, founder of TO Rescue in Ontario, saw her photo and did not hesitate: she had to be saved.
With Barrera’s care and a foster family, Kaya gained weight and showed who she really was: energetic, curious, and with a constant need to be close to someone and be held in their arms. She had to undergo surgery to relieve discomfort in her eyes, and although her vision is not perfect, she learned to get around without any problem and always notices when there is another dog, cat, or person by her side.
At 5 and a half months old, no one had asked about her. Only after that did someone finally take a chance. Barrera asks for just one simple thing: a home with time and affection to devote to her, something Kaya is more than ready to give back many times over.
